Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.
Formed in 1995 by Makoto Kawabata at the same time as the Acid Mothers Temple Soul Collective. The group released its debut album in 1997 on PSF Records (Japan), and it was selected as one of the years best albums in the The Wire magazine (UK). In 1998 the group played their first tours of the US and Europe. Since then the group has released a huge number of albums on labels from many different countries. As of 2017, the group has released around 80 albums.

Every year since 1998, they have toured extensively in the US and Europe, and more recently have started performing around Asia and in Japan too. The group has performed in collaboration with many musicians including psychedelic originators Gong and Guru Guru, Simeon (Silver Apples), Nik Turner (Hawkwind), and the Occitanian trad sinder Rosina de Peira. Japanese
collaborators have included Afrirampo, Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins), Maso Yamazaki (Masonna), Seiichi Yamamoto (Boredoms), Jun Kuriyama (The Ox), and many others. To begin with the group had a floating line-up with contributions from many members of the AMT Soul Collective. But as tours became more frequent, the group began to coalesce around a core touring line-up. Other bands were created with Acid Mothers Temple as part of their name (AMT & amp; The Cosmic Inferno, AMT SWR, The Space Paranoid, Acid Mothers Gong, Acid Mothers Guru Guru, etc.), but AMT, The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. has continued to function as the mothership and main lineage for all our activities.

In 2016, 21 years since the groups founding, there was a major shift in the line-up and was added to the name. We now view the first 20 years as chapter one in our story, and we are now turning the page to start chapter two. The current touring line-up is: Makoto Kawabata (the sole original member), Hiroshi Higashi, Mitsuko☆Tabata, Nani Satoshima, and Wolf.

MIKE KROL
https://mikekrol.bandcamp.com
Of all the breakups in Mike Krol’s songs, the most harrowing story is about his breakup with music. Music ruined Krol’s life. And then saved it. In chronicling that process, Krol has made his best record—Power Chords, Krol’s new Merge release is painful, voyeuristic, and angry, but ultimately transcendent and timeless. It is the sound of Krol giving in to a force greater than himself, as though the chords are playing him rather than the other way around.

The Mercury Program
https://themercuryprogram.bandcamp.com/album/new-myths

On November 2nd, Lovitt Records will reissue The Mercury Program’s third full-length A Data Learn the Language on 2xLP. Long out of print and extremely hard to find on wax, the record has been recut by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service and will be pressed on colored vinyl with a gatefold sleeve. To celebrate the release, the band will head out for two weeks worth of concert dates across the East coast. These shows will include two full sets — the first set consists of songs drawn from Chez Viking (2009) and New Myths (2016), followed by a second set featuring of A Data Learn the Language performed in it’s entirety.

Some background: originally released in 2002 on CD by Tiger Style, the vinyl version of A Data Learn the Language was left to Counterflow Records. However, as that label became caught up in legal and financial difficulties, the bulk of the pressing mysteriously disappeared. Fewer than 100 copies wound up making it into circulation.

Formed in Gainesville, Florida in 1997, The Mercury Program released music on Boxcar, Tiger Style, and Kindercore Records and toured heavily through the early ’00s. Now split between distant locales – with members spread between New York, Gainesville, and Palm City – the band has become slightly hiatus-prone as of late. A seven year gap divides the band’s two most recent records, Chez Viking (2009) and New Myths (2016).

“Odds and Ends” (Record Release)

Pile have never released the same album twice, since the project’s 2007
beginnings the Boston quartet have been continuously evolving, pushing
expectations, and obliterating good sensibility. A Hairshirt of Purpose, the band’s fifth album continues that tradition in a different light. Following the raw intensity and unpredictability of You’re Better Than This, the band settled down to create an album about “the joys of solitude” and “the inescapable selfishness of every action,” exploring the limits of the studio in the process. If their last album was a challenge to their audience, A Hairshirt of Purpose is a challenge to the band itself.
Recorded at home in Boston at The Record Co. the studio's big windows and
close proximity marked a change from the band’s previous recordings. Pile
vocalist/guitarist Rick Maguire shared, “we were at home and we could see the
sun, and I think both of those things lent themselves to a more focused and
deliberate record.” There’s a warmth and radiant accessibility to be found
throughout the album as the band experimented with different instruments (violin, viola, piano, organs, synths, banjo, etc) and a resounding push toward clarity.
Pile balance their ferocious tendencies with moments of beauty, building tension
with release never too far behind.

Well known as “your favorite band’s favorite band” and for a tireless work ethic,
Pile have earned their following from years of DIY touring and a humble
approach to uncompromising performances. Never afraid to switch styles, Pile’s music has morphed over the years, embracing both the ferocious and gentle sides of punk, indie, folk, and noise rock, delivering their own brand of gnarled
intensity. Since coming together as a full band in 2009, Pile have toured as much
as their lives collectively allow, playing over 600 shows spread out over the US,
Canada, UK and Europe

Ava Luna has always been a conversation between its members—sometimes inward-facing, but always uniquely worth eavesdropping on. Soul and funk, krautrock, post-punk, R&B, gospel and even reggae influences all bounce off each other in sync with each participant’s idiosyncratic background and interests. With Moon 2, that specificity has only tightened but, as in any relationship that has existed for the better part of a decade, the conversation has evolved.

The Donkeys + Seán Barna (Album Release) at Comet Ping Pong
$12 10:00 PM All Ages

The Donkeys - San Diego
http://www.donkeysongs.com/
California places a distinct sonic stamp upon the music born within its boundaries. Owens had his Bakersfield, Parsons his Joshua Tree, and Malkmus his Stockton, and in their tunes you can hear dust, desert highways, and skateboards gliding over suburbia. The Donkeys have San Diego, and from that environment have woven a fundamental ease in their music - a rock, a roll, a sway, a slide - you could even call it a breeze. On Ride the Black Wave, The Donkeys continue their easy rolling, classic vibrations, but add a mystery and tension that make this record their most lyrically and instrumentally compelling.

Ride the Black Wave embodies what Jack Kerouac described of California's coast as having an "end of the land sadness." The Donkeys stare out at the ocean in a "fantastic drowse" - a kind of pensiveness towards their environs that summons the elements of sound and style that belong only to them. In "Blues In The Afternoon", a collective mantra, the band runs out of land and asks of the ocean to offer suggestions about their fate. It is songs like these that prove the Donkeys are a band in the true sense of the word, sharing each other's worry and wonder. With RTBW, The Donkeys have further caged their craft and have accomplished the delicate and artful challenge of taming the captured, while also letting it be wild.

Seán Barna (DC)
Album Release Show
www.seanbarna.com

Seán Barna is a singer, songwriter, and drummer based in New York City.

Employing a highly-visual lyrical panache and an atypically full-throated singing style, Barna is preparing to release Cissy, a gasping, 5-song exploration of isolation, anxiety, queerness, and mortality. Written and recorded in a marathon four-day session in an old tavern-turned-studio in upstate New York and featuring a collaboration with Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows, Cissy is a measured, brutally observant deconstruction of masculinity, where the main players in the story – drag queens, mothers, queers, office workers, and wanderers – come together in the name of excess to achieve a well-worn life. Whether redefining gender norms and savoring a cheap beer the morning after a big night, these characters find peace on their own terms, with drugs, sex, fashion, and beautiful music.

Barna plays both drums and guitar on Cissy, but it is his rare poetic bravado and stream-of-consciousness vocal delivery – theatrical and pained but grounded and honest – that guides us, shines a light on our traumas, and invites us in for a drink.

Pylon Reenactment Society (Athens, GA)
pylonreenactmentsociety.com

The band Pylon is considered to be one of the most influential bands at the beginnings of what would become known as the “Athens, GA music scene.” 30 years ago, Pylon, along with The B-52’s and R.E.M., were heavily featured in the original feature documentary, "Athens, GA: Inside/Out," which propelled them into the international spotlight. Pylon was every Athens, GA band’s favorite Athens band. Their musical naïveté, southern upbringing, art school smarts, and house-party roots exploded together to create something quite improbably amazing simultaneously hitting the listener on a mental, physical, and spiritual level. Fronted by Vanessa Briscoe (now Briscoe Hay), whose inimitable vocal textures and phrasing defined the band’s sound for most listeners, Pylon’s celebrated history came to a sudden end in 2009 with the death of iconic guitarist Randy Bewley. Pylon was, and always will be, HayBewleyMichael Lachowski, and Curtis Crowe.

Pylon Reenactment Society was created in 2014 when local Athens’ musician Jason NeSmithwas in charge of the music committee for the first annual Art Rocks Athens, an event exploring the connection between the art and music scene in Athens between the years 1975-1985.  He approached Hay about performing a short set of Pylon songs (all four members had attended Lamar Dodd School of Art at UGA).  NeSmith’s band, Casper & The Cookies, had already recorded and performed with Hay as Supercluster.  The response was very positive.  The following year found PRS opening for Fred Schneider (of The B-52s), touring with Dressy Bessy, and performing shows in conjunction with the release of Pylon Live.  What started as a one-off gig transpired into a tight, touring unit.  In addition to Hay and NeSmith, PRS is rounded out with Kay Stanton (Casper & The Cookies) on bass guitar and backing vocals, Damon Denton on keyboards (Big Atomic), and Joe Rowe (The Glands) on drums.

PRS released a 6-song EP, "Part Time Punks Session," on Chunklet Industries in October of 2017 to rave reviews! Creative Loafing gave it a 4 Star review saying, "From the first 30 seconds of opener 'Feast on My Heart,' Hay’s signature growl retains the infectious force that helped enshrine the Gyrate track in the post-punk canon. Though the rest of the band members weren’t actually in Pylon, they faithfully revive the interplay between its original member as jagged guitars, dance-floor drum rhythms and mammoth bass erase the lines between punk and disco. Released via Chunklet, 'Part Time Punks Session' may generate renewed interest in one of Athens’ most venerated but perpetually underground bands, while convincing longtime fans that the Pylon Reenactment Society charts a fresh and faithful course."

Mary Ocher (Berlin)
maryocher.com
Mary Ocher is back in North America with her new album "The West Against The People" and its companion release "Faust Studio Sessions", following a European release tour of 20 countries.

Mary has been persistently creating passionate, uncompromising work, raw, thought provoking, socially and creatively pushing against the current, dealing with subjects of authority, identity and conflict. Her work is as enchanting as it is polarizing, ranging from traditional folk to raw 60s garage, ambient with ethereal vocals and abstract synths, to experimental pop with African and South American rhythms, when accompanied by her drummers.

"The West Against The People" was released on the German label Klangbad in spring 2017 and recorded with Hans Joachim Irmler of Krautrock pioneers Faust. It features solo tracks, as well as tracks with her two drummers Your Government, and elusive cult legends Die Tödliche Doris and Felix Kubin. It also features an essay elaborating on the themes of the album and analyzing the current sociopolitical climate*. The album is currently in its second edition, it was hailed by the British music press and featured in various "Best of 2017" lists.

The additional 10" vinyl "Faust Studio Sessions and Other Recordings" (a co-release of Klangbad with Swedish label Sing A Song Fighter) features additional collaborations with cello player Julia Kent and German experimental artist Hans Unstern. A special tape edition for the tour is released on Related Records. Her previous solo release was produced by Canadian Psych Rock&Roll guru King Khan

Odetta Hartman (solo) (NYC)
https://odettahartman.bandcamp.com/
With a heart - stopping voice & wide - ranging instrumental talent, Odetta Hartman carries cowboy soul into an era where country can clash with computers, and bluegrass isn't afraid of bass. Her debut LP 222 -- an experimental, bedroom-produced hybrid of folk, musique concrète and psychedelia -- was released on Northern Spy Records in 2015 to critical acclaim. Alongside her partner, sound artist and producer Jack Inslee, Odetta continues to explore the sonic vernacular created by their uncanny collaboration: badass banjos, detuned violins, field recordings, superstitious soundscapes, and vocal stylings ranging from sensual to spooky.
Odetta's new album, Old Rockhounds Never Die, is set to be released on Northern Spy Records in August 2018.

Dumb Waiter (VA)
dumbwaiterva.bandcamp.com
Dumb Waiter is an American avant-jazz rock band formed in late 2012 in Richmond, VA who write a melodic amalgam of math rock, jazz, metal, and punk. The band is comprised of four members who have varying levels of musical education, but have achieved a high level of technical proficiency on their respective instruments. Together they blend a love for heavily distorted tones, melodic complexity, volatile energy, and augmented chord shapes to create "Dumb Waiter". Thumping blast beats and effected bass grooves lay the bottom layer over which spiraling guitar work and free-wheeling sax noises progress and thrive.
